1854-C $5 MS63 PCGS. Variety 22-I. The 1854-C is one of the most difficult Charlotte Fives from this decade, although equal attention has often been accorded to C-mints of lesser rarity. Just 39,283 pieces were struck and the number of Mint State survivors probably tops out at half dozen or so pieces, with several of these falling under the "Weak Mintmark" category. The strength of the mintmark on this remarkable Condition Census example, although from the same reverse die as those with ill-defined mintmarks, is as bold as any we have seen.
This particular coin is sharply struck including the often weak centers. This, alone, is highly unusual for this issue. Also, it is atypical in that it has bright, sparkling mint luster over each side and very few abrasions--quite unlike the heavily marked coins usually encountered. Many examples of this variety also show a weakly defined mintmark. But again, this coin is atypical in that the C is strongly brought up on the lower reverse. A grade-limiting identifier is noted on the reverse; that being a bisecting scratch from the A in STATES down across the eagle to the E in FIVE. A couple of noticeable die cracks are also seen on the reverse. A rare opportunity for the Southern gold specialist. Population: 2 in 63, 0 finer (1/05). Lot:7819
