<B>1854-C $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> Variety 15-I. This is a sharp and evenly struck example with good balance between the obverse and the reverse, unlike on many examples which appear more worn on the latter side than on the former. As on most 1854-C quarter eagles, there is a raised wire edge on the obverse from 11 o'clock to 3 o'clock. For the assigned grade, this piece is very clean with an almost complete absence of noticeable marks. A few light hairlines (not from cleaning) can be seen under light magnification. The luster is satiny and somewhat subdued which is typical for the issue; very few 1854-C quarter eagles are seen with the sort of bright, vibrant luster found on, say, the 1840s issues from this mint. Both sides have a medium reddish-gold hue that is quite pleasing. All in all, this is a choice coin for the grade with good eye appeal and light wear.<BR> The 1854-C is a bit more available in higher grades than one might think from an issue with a small production figure of only 7,295 pieces. There are as many as six or seven true Uncirculated coins.
