1854 50C Arrows PR65 NGC.
1854 50C Arrows PR65 NGC.<p>Writing in 1993, Wiley and Bugert had this terse comment to make about the proof 1854 Arrows Seated Half: "Less than 6 known." Current NGC and PCGS population data, however, reports 22 coins certified in all grades, one of which is impaired (10/01). Even allowing for resubmissions, it seems that Wiley and Bugert's estimate is too conservative. Breen (1988) states that "probably fewer than 20 proofs survive," and, when taken in conjunction with the above quoted population data, this estimate is probably the most accurate. This coin is curious in that the strike is not full in all areas. The top of Liberty's head, stars 7-8, and the eagle's right talon are all a bit softly defined. The knife rims and mirrored fields do, however, confirm this coin's status as a proof. The diagnostics also match those given by Breen in his 1977 Proof Encyclopedia: "...very high date, 54 practically touching...foot supported but toe not enclosed (lapped die)." Both sides are richly and originally toned with cobalt-blue and charcoal shadings around the rims and lighter champagne and reddish-gray colors in the centers. An important bidding opportunity for either the advanced Seated Half Dollar specialist or the proof type collector.Ex: September 1998 Long Beach Signature Sale--The Andre Dawson Collection of All-American Coins (Heritage, 9/98), lot 6778.
