1854 50C Arrows MS66 PCGS. After passage of the M
1854<50C> Arrows MS66 PCGS. After passage of the Mint Act in early 1853, and the subsequent reduction in weight of subsidiary silver coinage, the weight reduction was signified by the addition of arrows on the obverse and rays on the reverse of the quarters and halves in 1853. In 1854, the rays were dropped from the reverse but the arrows remained through 1855. As a result, the Arrows type is short-lived and highly desirable to all collectors of 19th century type coins. This is a superlative example that displays bright, shimmering mint luster with speckles of golden-brown and blue toning around the margins--otherwise brilliant. Fully struck in all areas with no obvious marks. Population: 6 in 66, 0 finer (6/05).
From The Melrose Bay Collection.
