1854 3CS MS65 NGC. The relatively odd composition of the initial Three Cent Silvers (0.750 silver, 0.250 copper) was necessary because silver coins that contained 90% silver and 10% copper were not circulating in the United States through the early years of the 1850s. By 1854, however, the Mint Act of February 21, 1853 had solved this problem and it was time for the Three Cent Silver to match the composition of the larger silver denominations. In addition to the composition, which became 0.900 silver, 0.100 copper, the Mint modified the design of the Trime by adding extra outlines to the obverse star and a bundle of arrows and an olive sprig around the reverse Roman numeral III. Survivors of the 1854-1858 Type Two deliveries are among the most difficult Three Cent Silvers to locate in the finer Mint State grades. Beautifully frosted with whispers of golden-tan patina around the peripheries, this coin is uncommonly smooth for the type. There are also no areas of bothersome striking incompleteness, although we do note some clashmarks (as produced) in and around the centers. A coin that should be of obvious importance to the high grade type collector. Population: 24 in 65, just fine are finer (11/02).
