1854<$3> MS65 PCGS. The 1854 was the first year of issue of what some considered to be an unnecessary denomination. Many were saved as souvenirs, and others circulated only briefly, with some ending up as cufflinks or other jewelry. Specimens are fairly available through the MS64 grade level, but full Gem and better coins are more difficult. Indeed, PCGS and NGC have currently certified fewer than 30 pieces in MS65, and ten or so coins finer.
The present Gem yields dazzling luster exuded from peach-gold surfaces that are imbued with traces of lime-green. The design elements are well impressed, including the hair beneath the headband, which is often weak on this issue. We do point out that the lower part of the digit 8 in the date reveals minor softness. Both sides are nicely preserved, though an unobtrusive pinscratch concealed in the hair beneath the BER of LIBERTY is mentioned for accuracy, as is a miniscule obverse rim tick at 11 o'clock. Population: 14 in 65, 8 finer (3/06).
