1854 $3 MS64 PCGS. This first-year-of-issue three dollar is also the highest mintage of the series (138,618 business strikes). It is, according to David Bowers and Doug Winter (2005), the second most available date in Mint State, trailing the 1878. Though no hoards have been reported, it is likely that many were saved as curiosities. Over 200 near-Gem examples have been seen by PCGS and NGC, and fewer than 40 that rate higher.
Like the vast majority of pieces, the MS64 described here has finely grained, satiny luster that reaches out to the viewer. It also possesses the warm orange-gold color typical of most pieces, interspersed in this case with occasional splashes of mint-green. The design features are for the most part well defined, except for the usual softness in the hair below IBER of LIBERTY. A few inoffensive marks preclude the attainment of a higher grade. A very pleasing coin for the type collector.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
