<B>1854<$3> MS64 PCGS.</B></I> This first-year of issue three dollar gold piece has the dual distinction of being a one-year design subtype, and also the highest mintage issue of the denomination. With a production of 138,000 coins, it is the only issue with a six figure mintage. On the reverse, the letters in DOLLARS are smaller than those used in subsequent years. This near-Gem example is a splendid piece. It has highly lustrous and fully brilliant yellow-gold surfaces with vibrant cartwheel luster. Only a few finer quality pieces have been certified, just 22 pieces by PCGS (9/06).
