<B>1854 25C Arrows PR64 PCGS.</B></I> This is the first of a brief two-year design type, and is an important rarity in Proof format. Although in the past the rarity has sometimes been overstated, there are relatively few Proofs known. Walter Breen estimated that about 10 Proof quarters survived from the 1854 mintage of eight to 10 pieces, and 20 more from the 1855 mintage of 15 plus coins. Although, logically the 1854 is rarer, the grading services have actually certified more 1854 than 1855 Proof quarter dollars. PCGS and NGC have combined to certify 25 Proofs of 1854 and just 12 of 1855. Based on all of this data, we will conclude that about 20 to 25 of each exist, although a complete census is the only way to be certain. Regardless of the specific numbers, this is an extremely important opportunity for the advanced collector. This is a sharply struck coin with deeply reflective fields and lustrous devices. Slight cameo contrast is masked by dark steel and iridescent toning on both sides.
