1854<$20> Small Date AU55 NGC. Breen-7167. Repunched Date. Although variety collectors are not plentiful for the Liberty double eagles, there are a number of important varieties that have been discovered over the years. This particular variety is given a separate listing in Breen, and it is briefly mentioned by Bowers. In their "Interesting Varieties" section for the 1854 double eagle, Winter and Crum make no mention of this repunched date. Breen described this variety with the date first punched too high, but the date was actually first punched with an upward slant from left to right. The digit 1 shows doubling below the upper serif and the base, the 8 is normal, the 5 is slightly doubled above the flag, and the 4 is clearly doubled over the upright.
While the surfaces exhibit a few scattered marks, they are not abraded to the extent normally encountered. Although not a fully struck example, the design definition is certainly adequate. Both sides have frosty yellow-gold surfaces with lighter yellow luster around the devices. Light wear is evident on the high points of the design, as expected for the grade.
From The Wyoming Collection.
