1854[$20] Large Date AU58 PCGS.
1854<$20> Large Date AU58 PCGS. The 1854 is a scarcer date in AU grades, and in Uncirculated condition it is a very rare and overlooked issue. Probably 90% of the 1854 double eagles extant are of the Small Date variety; however, a small number are known with a large date. Apparently the Large Date variant was struck from the logotype used for silver dollars, and survivors in any grade, but especially AU58 and better, are extremely rare.
This piece has strong definition on all the design elements and most of the original mint luster is still seen in the fields, although a bit thin. Very clean overall with the most obvious impairments being a short diagonal streak of grease (as struck) on the right side of the shield, and a small mark between the eagle's left (facing) wing and the left side of the rays.
The Condition Census for the Large Date 1854 appears to start at the AU55 level, placing this coin somewhere in the lower range of the C.C. The Large Date will undoubtedly become an integral part of the Type One series as it becomes better known. Population: 6 in 58, 0 finer (3/04).

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
