1854 $20 Kellogg & Co.<p>Twenty Dollar AU53 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. K-2, R.4. The dissolution of the U.S. Assay Office of Gold as a coinage facility started a brief period in California's coinage history when no private firm was producing gold coins for circulation. Although Curtis & Perry received the contract for the United States branch mint at San Francisco, it took several months before that institution could produce coins. The void was filled by Kellogg & Co., which delivered its first Double Eagles on February 19, 1854. This fortunate survivor is bright with yellow-gold color. Deeper olive-gold shadings are seen as the coin turns away from the light. The central features are well defined and the moderately abraded surfaces reveal a sizeable mark in the reverse field below the eagle. A reeding mark in the left reverse field is also noted for accuracy. This coin includes a deluxe presentation box. Listed on page 299 of the 2002 Guide Book.
