1854 $20 Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar MS61 NGC. Long Arrows. K-2, R.4. Ex: Eliasberg. Redbook Plate Coin. Formerly offered as lot 7844 in our 1999 FUN Sale, where it was described as, "A bright, lustrous, yellow-gold example of this historic territorial issue. Because this piece is preserved in Mint condition and sharply struck, the portrait of Liberty stands out from the field with three-dimensional clarity and more closely resembles a medal than a coin produced for commercial usage. The lustrous surfaces show a few abrasions that help identify this piece as the Eliasberg specimen: a mark is prominently placed on the cheek of Liberty behind the nose, and on the reverse a short dig covers the top of the C in CALIFORNIA. Kellogg & Co. was the last major entry in the field of private coinage in San Francisco with 1854 being the first year of production. It is assumed that Albert Kuner was the engraver for this and other Kellogg issues. A historic and transitional issue that spans the time between the closing of the Assay Office and opening of the San Francisco Mint."Ex: J.M. Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate, 1942, to Louis E.
