1854<$20> Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU58 NGC. K-1a, R.4. John G. Kellogg, a former employee of the U.S. Assay Office, partnered with G.F. Richter to produce quality private Twenty Dollar gold pieces in 1854 and 1855. The new San Francisco Mint was in operation these two years, but due to growing pains and a shortage of parting acids, could not adequately supply the west coast economy. Kellogg and another firm, Wass, Molitor & Co., filled the need of local commerce until the mint was fully up to the task. Struck from somewhat rotated dies, this subdued olive-gold piece is nicely struck and relatively unmarked. Luster shimmers throughout protected areas.
