1854 $20 Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU58 NGC. K-1b, R
1854<$20> Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU58 NGC. K-1b, R.5. This variety has a thin date with short arrowheads on the reverse. The reverse design is identical to the 1853-dated Moffat & Co. twenty dollar coin. John Glover Kellogg and his then partner G.F. Richter were both employed by Moffat & Co. before that firm ceased operations on December 14, 1853. The United States Assay Office, operated by Curtis & Perry, retained the Moffat & Co. name until they closed their offices to make way for the San Francisco Branch Mint. Donald Kagin suggested that Kellogg may have brought the reverse die (or dies) with him to his new venture. The new Kellogg twenty-dollar gold pieces were first coined on February 9, 1854, and from then until the end of production in 1855, approximately 300,000 examples were coined. This example has rich olive-gold color and lighter yellow-gold luster around the devices. The surfaces are quite smooth without any blemishes other than the usual scattered ticks in the fields.
From The Wyoming Collection.
