1854 $20 Kellogg & Co. Twenty Dollar AU53 PCGS. Short Arrows, K-1a, R.4. The Kellogg coinage belongs to the third wave of California Gold Rush coinage, with the first being the private coinages of Dubosq, Schultz, Moffat, and others, the second the Humbert-U.S. Assay Office pieces. John Kellogg began employment with Moffat & Co. and the U.S. Assay Office under Curtis, Perry, and Ward. When the Assay Office dissolved in December 1853, no gold coinage was being struck, as the San Francisco Mint had yet to open. Kellogg entered a partnership with G.F. Richter, and they made their first twenty dollar gold pieces in February 1854.
On the K-1a the three short arrows are differently shaped, and well away from the ornament edge. On the obverse KELLOGG & CO. is centered on the coronet, and the 4 in the date is higher than the remaining digits. This greenish-gold piece boasts the usual sharp strike over greenish-gold surfaces, with considerable luster remaining under lightly scuffy surfaces. Listed on page 363 of the 2008 Guide Book. Population: 14 in 53, 30 finer (7/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
