1854<$2 1/2> Liberty Quarter Eagle--Major Die Break--AU58 ANACS. While technically correct, the label of 'major die break' does not fully describe what has happened on this coin. This quarter eagle is actually the latest state of a retained die cud. This began as a rim to rim die break. In this state the interior portion of the break has fallen out of the die but the outer portion (the denticles) are still partially present. The next state would be a full die cud where none of the design elements in this area are visible, just a blob of metal in its place. As such this is a very scarce and infrequently seen die state. Only a few coins could have been produced from this state of the dies before the denticles fell out of the die also. As expected, the obverse denticles on the obverse rim opposite the break are weakened, since metal flowed into the die break during the strike. Once again, a rarely seen phenomenon in the striking of gold coins with greater attention paid to these higher denomination pieces. Sharply struck throughout with almost complete mint luster and minimal marks for the grade. A thin mark on the cheek requires mention.
From The Henderson Collection of U.S. Gold Errors.
