1854<1C> N-20, R.3. AU50 EAC. Removed from the NGC holder for better examination. NGC had graded this MS63 Brown. Grellman state c. This is the unique "terminal die state" example reported with a rim cud over star 6. We do not believe that this is actually a rim break, but rather a minting anomaly. While the fields are lightly flowlined, and the reverse is sinking slightly around the legend, most or all of the points that eventually fade and disappear, including the lines at Liberty's throat, actually remain visible on this example. We cannot think of a scenario where characteristics of both the early die state and the late die state are both visible on the same coin. Bob Grellman recently examined this coin, and explained that the "cud" is actually a fold in the metal that accorded at the time it was struck. Envelope Included.
