1854 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS
1854 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. N-30, Low R.7. This splendid cent is possibly the finest known specimen of the rare N-30 die marriage, one of just nine pieces known in all grades. Only two other Mint State examples are currently known, and just one of those is in similar quality. It is a Choice Mint State example with considerable mint red on light brown surfaces with full luster. A few minor handling marks and tiny carbon specks keep this piece out of the Gem category. A minuscule hairline scratch in the field just below the hairbun can only be seen with careful examination. In June 2002, an AU grade piece sold for $6,037.50 in the Robinson Brown sale. More recently, an XF40 piece sold for $5,500 in the 2007 EAC sale. This variety is a muling of previously known dies, and was discovered in 1993. The obverse is a later state of the die used for N-21 and the reverse is an earlier state of the die used for N-23.
