Unc Details, Net AU55.</B></I> The 1854 Seated Dollar is one of the scarcest business strikes in the series, in any condition. Although this date shows a mintage figure of 33,140 pieces, which is higher than many of its contemporaries, the 1854 has long been recognized as a rarity. One explanation for the scarcity of this date is that most of the coins were shipped overseas to China as soon as they were struck. Walter Breen noted that 10,000 Silver Dollars bearing this date were shipped to San Francisco in November, 1854. Whether these remained in California, or were shipped to Asia, we do not know.<BR> The currently offered example has nice surfaces, bold detail and a pleasing dove-gray color on both sides. Minor hairlines constitute the only obvious evidence of an old cleaning. A minimal degree of surface blemishes exist, for the assigned grade, and the coin's overall appearance is very pleasing.
