Antebellum tax, property document, dated 1853. Albemarle County, Virginia tax bill for the property of Joseph Campbell, including "18 Blacks & Male Free Negroes" among his other chattel. Partly printed DS, 1p, 8 3/4"X 4", 1853. Annual tax bill for $47.66 directed to the County Sheriff. Enumerated taxes to be levied upon 709 acres of land, 18 Blacks at 60 cents each, 21 horses at $720, 1 white male at forty cents; and other chattel, including the reporting of any Male Free Negroes at the rate of $1.
