K-18, R.2. Assay $20 gold pieces became the standard gold coins in Gold Rush San Francisco before the mint opened. As such, they are usually in circulated grades even though quite a few were produced. These are the most readily available of all territorial gold coins, and were, in fact, official issues of the United States Government. As such, these are legitimately collectible issues that should be considered part of the Federal double eagle series. This piece is retains its frosty surface and is well defined throughout with notably strong definition on the shield. The green-gold surfaces show very few abrasions and have just the slightest hint of reddish patina.
