1853$1> MS64 PCGS. The Act of 1853 mandated a lowering of the weight of silver coins from the half dime through the half dollar, but the dollar was left untouched. Silver dollars were now worth more as bullion, and no longer circulated at par. Many were exported and subsequently melted. About 120 or so 1853 dollars have been certified by PCGS and NGC, of which fewer than 35 have been graded near-Gem, and a mere three pieces finer.
The present example displays satin-like luster and subtle grayish-tan patina. The design elements are well impressed, except for the star centers along the right (facing) border. A few unobtrusive, trivial marks preclude a higher grade. Overall, a very pleasing Seated dollar. Population: 8 in 64, 2 finer (3/06).
