1853<S$1> MS62 PCGS. Other than the hoard issues of 1859-O and 1860-O, the 1853 is one of the more available of the No Motto Seated Dollars in Uncirculated grades. The quantity of survivors at that level, however, is still quite low due to widespread circulation and heavy melting. PCGS has certified just 51 coins in Mint State, and NGC has graded 67 pieces (6/05). In his 1993 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, Bowers notes that the vast majority of the business strike 1853 Seated Dollars are the "Chin Whiskers" variety, whimsically named for vertical die lines (as made) below Liberty's chin. The present specimen fits that category, and displays boldly impressed design elements throughout. The silvery surfaces display soft luster and faded lavender and steel-blue peripheral patination. A few miniscule contact marks are noted on each side, and a more noticeable abrasion is visible on Liberty's neck at the jawline. Population: 19 in 62, 28 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L.
