1853<P1C> One Cent, Judd-151, Pollock-178, Low R.6--Struck 65% Off Center--PR65 PCGS. The obverse is the same as that used to coin regular issue 1853 quarter eagles. The reverse shows the denomination ONE CENT within a laurel wreath. Struck in a 40% nickel, 60% copper alloy with a reeded edge.
We have handled most of the major patterns, die trials, and experimental pieces over the years and in various metals as well as states of preservation. However, this is the first off center pattern we have encountered, and it is simply spectacular. The top half of the obverse design shows and the bottom of the reverse. The remainder of the piece is blank flan. It is obvious that this piece was well preserved over the years as the unstruck portion of each side is absent the detracting abrasions usually seen on off center coins. Included with this lot is a small white box that was obviously adapted for the purpose of housing this coin. On one side it reads: 1793 / Cr. 1-A / Seldom equalled / $100. The other, and more germane side reads: 1853 / Small / Cent / Pattern.
Brilliant throughout and fully struck, where struck, with no distractions evident.
Ex: Barney Bluestone Sale (June 1940), lot 508.
