Simply put, this is one of the rarest silver coins in this sale. The New Orleans Mint struck 160,000 Half Dimes early in 1853 before the Mint Act of February 21 reduced the weight of this denomination from 1.34 grams to 1.24 grams. It is highly unlikely that all 1853-O No Arrows Half Dimes were actually distributed. Most were probably melted in the Mint to provide bullion for the production of the first 1853-O Arrows coins. As evidenced by the existence of the coin in this lot, of course, some '53-O No Arrows Half Dimes were released into commerce. Even so, we suspect that most of those coins eventually found their way back to the Mint, where they were likewise destroyed.<BR>Very, very few 1853-O No Arrows Half Dimes have survived to the present day--a fact that makes this issue one of the rarest O-mint deliveries in the Seated series. Mint State coins are particularly elusive, and this near-Gem is the first such piece that this cataloger has handled in several years. A beautiful coin, both sides are deeply and originally toned in dominant charcoal-copper patina. Direct angles do reveal brighter undertones of cobalt-blue and pale-gold colors, as well as full mint bloom in a satiny texture. The overall strike is boldly executed, and the only mentionable softness of detail is confined to the top of the wreath on the reverse. A few wispy abrasions in the obverse field are only discernible with the aid of a loupe, and they do little more than confirm the validity of the MS-64 grade from PCGS.<BR>A word of caution is perhaps in order regarding the reported population figures for the 1853-O No Arrows Half Dime. Although PCGS reports having certified four examples in MS-64, we suspect (but cannot prove) that that figure is inflated by resubmissions. In our opinion, it is probable that there are only one or two different '53-O No Arrows Half Dimes certified as MS-64 by PCGS. But regardless of exactly how many coins have been graded thus, the present MS-64 is definitely ranked as Condition Census #2 for this very rare and challenging issue. An extremely important bidding opportunity for the advanced numismatist.
