1853-O $20 AU53 PCGS. This example is highly lustrous, with appealing olive-gold surfaces unaffected by bothersome marks. At the start of the California Gold Rush, New Orleans had the closest operating mint to the action. The result was that the production of Double Eagles in 1851 and 1852 totaled nearly half a million pieces. In 1853, production in New Orleans dropped to 71,000 coins and with the opening of a mint in San Francisco, the production of New Orleans gold coinage was seriously reduced. Only 13,500 Double Eagles were produced in New Orleans between 1854 to 1856. A beautiful representative of this coveted issue. Population: 9 in 53, 35 finer (11/07).
From The York/Hallenbeck #2 Current Finest PCGS Registry Set of Liberty Double Eagles.

Coin Engraver: James B.
