1853-O $20 AU53 NGC. The highpoints of the design are light worn on this modestly circulated piece. It displays considerable luster that is visible in the protected areas. The mintage of the 1853-O double eagle was 71,000 coins, much smaller than any of the previous New Orleans issues. When gold was first discovered in California, the New Orleans Mint was actually the closest operating branch mint, thus substantial quantities of newly minted gold was sent there. Once the U.S. Assay Office and other entities became well entrenched by 1853, gold was converted to coin locally in San Francisco, and the opening of the branch Mint in San Francisco in 1874 marked the end of gold shipments to distant mints.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
