1853 H10C Arrows MS67 NGC. Pursuant to the Mint Act of February 21, 1853, the half dime, like its dime, quarter, and half dollar counterparts, had its weight decreased in order to facilitate circulation and decrease the melting of subsidiary and gold coinage. In order to help citizens of the 1850s distinguish these new lightweight half dimes from their old tenor counterparts, arrowheads were placed on each side of the date, which coincidentally created an important three-year type for today's collectors. This is a sharply struck example that displays exemplary luster characteristics. The obverse has thick, frosted mint luster, while the reverse is even brighter with evidence of light die striations in the fields. This is technically an iridescent coin with many colors present. However, the centers are primarily lilac and lime-green and turn to rich, deep rainbow coloration around the margins. Essentially abrasion-free surfaces with extraordinary eye appeal. Population: 2 in MS67 , none are finer (2/05).
