1853 Struck by Frontier, Deviercy Co. for the French jewelers Gaime, Guillemot Co., Montgomery Street, San Francisco. While Jay Roe considered the entire G.G. series to be patterns, some reached circulation because at least one (perhaps not this type) was recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853. Very neat work; large head, G G. below, 13 stars around, 12th star not in line with G G.; reverse of BG-213 (lot 039). Only 5 or 6 examples known. Plate Coin, second edition, Breen-Gillio, California Pioneer Fractional Gold. Sharply struck, flashy, Prooflike Brilliant Uncirculated. Finest Known! PCGS MS62. Ex Bowers and Merena Jay Roe 9/14/2003, Lot 30, Ex Jay Roe Collection, Ex Heritage sale 12/16/1984, Lot 294. This coin is so rare that there are only three sales records, only one of which is mint state-this coin. Serial# 60012909 Totheroh Collection HKA#63384
