1853 G$1 MS68 NGC. Produced in staggering numbers for the era, the 1853 (4 million pieces struck) is the most plentiful Gold Dollar from the standpoint of total number of coins extant. An argument can also be made for labeling this issue as the most common in the entire Gold Dollar series of 1849-1889. One should have little trouble locating examples in grades up to and including MS65, although coins at the Gem level are scarce when compared to the number of high grade collectors in today's hobby. The true rarity of this issue, however, does not emerge until one crosses the Superb Gem threshold. The combined NGC and PCGS population of examples that grade finer than MS66 includes only 13 coins in MS67, one (the present representative) in MS68, and three pieces in MS69 (10/02). It has been nearly seven years since we last offered an 1853 Gold Dollar at or above the MS68 level, and it is likely to be at least that many before we do so again. A captivating example of the issue as well as the type, both sides are awash in scintillating frosty luster. The color is a rich orange-gold shade with suggestions of even more vivid reddish-gold overtones here and there. A couple of tiny swirls of slightly deeper color are noted in the obverse field before, above, and below Liberty's portrait. There is not a single bothersome handling mark, but several interesting obverse die cracks (as struck) are evident at the left border and along the truncation of Liberty's neck. Striations in several areas of the reverse field and faint clashmarks (all of which are also as struck) at the back of Liberty's head can be seen under a loupe. The eye appeal and technical quality of this coin are equally difficult to surpass. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
