1853 G$1 MS65 NGC. By 1851, with the burgeoning supplies of gold caused by the California Gold Rush, the price of silver, reckoned in terms of gold or other measures, skyrocketed past the melt value of silver dollars, which promptly disappeared from circulation. The Philadelphia Mint made enormous numbers of gold dollars in 1851-53 to attempt to compensate for the disappearing silver dollars, and accordingly beautiful Gem coins such as the present example are encountered. The yellow-gold obverse deepens to orange-gold on the reverse, and both sides show intense luster. The strike is bold, and the cumulative effect is impressive.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
