1853 Large Liberty head, smaller than the broad head type, signed below truncation of bust (always weak and incomplete), 11 stars around; blundered reverse of BG-209 with backwards 4. The earliest self-identified Frontier, Deviercy Co. round ¼ Dollar. Extremely Rare--only 10 recorded specimens going back to 1954, surely with some duplication, and none reported since. Even wear, planchet flaw reverse (outer bright gold layer peeling, with loss at OL exposing baser core). (Many if not all Frontier Deviercy pieces are clad coins, with a lower grade gold core [Jay Roe measured one at slightly above 14k] clad with surfaces of approximately 18k. Joseph Brothers used the same technique--see Lot 002.) PCGS XF45. Ex Bowers and Merena Boyd, Brand Ryder 3-30-1990, Lot 1706; ex Brand heirs; ex Virgil Brand (acquired 1920). The Roe specimen, in AU58, is the only modern recorded public sale in the last 30 years. Serial# 26703049 Totheroh Collection HKA#63368
