1853 Known to have been issued in the year dated: three were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sailed December 1, 1853, of which this may be one. The light stain on obverse may indicate possible salt water immersion. Same head, 13 stars around, F.D. behind, but Frontier Deviercy replaced the Humbert style eagle with one adapted from the new 1853 Arrows and Rays half dollars (perhaps thinking that this design change was permanent), 50.CENTS below. Very popular type; nicknamed "peacock" by Kagin’s founder A.M. Kagin many years ago because of the resemblance of the rays to tail feathers. Bright gold color. PCGS Genuine (Damage or Tooling -- UNC Details). Under microscopy, there is no tooling evident to the describer. Serial# 26703311 Totheroh Collection HKA#63521
