1853 This type is listed among the "California Coins" in Montroville Wilson Dickeson, M.D., The American Numismatical Manual, Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott Co., 1859 (cataloger’s copy inscribed "Edward Hill Sept 22nd. 1859"), p. 226 and Plate XVIII, 14. Though the date is given correctly in the text as 1853, the artist drew the date as 1857 on the plate, mistaking the flat-topped 3 for a 7. Similar obverse, but all stars close to border except 2nd; 1st, 4th, and 6th almost touch device; same reverse. By Deriberpie. Rare. Bright gold color, lustrous, hint of toning at reverse rim; obverse scratch, though long, is hard to make out. PCGS Genuine (Scratch -- AU Details). Serial# 26897448 Totheroh Collection HKA#63638
