1853-D G$1 MS63 PCGS.
1853-D G$1 MS63 PCGS. Winter 5-G. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Die file mark from the rim to the star at 9 o'clock on the obverse. Struck from a perfect obverse die with no cracks.RARITY INFORMATION: There are an estimated 110 to 120 examples known of this issue. The 1853-D is reasonably obtainable in About Uncirculated but is quite rare in Mint State with just six or seven properly graded pieces known. The PCGS and NGC population figures have been significantly inflated by resubmissions.STRIKE: This is the last Dahlonega gold dollar that can be found with a sharp strike. The Green Pond collection specimen boasts excellent detail. The hair on the obverse has fully separated curls while all of the stars show complete radial lines. On the reverse, the date, mintmark, and wreath are sharp. The denticles on both sides are individually defined. Even by the standards of this issue, the strike is quite exceptional.SURFACES: Some light hairlines can be seen with magnification on the lower portion of the obverse. Both sides have no readily detracting marks although a tiny abrasion on the base of Liberty's cheek might be cited as a future pedigree identifier. Some raised mint-made die scratches can be seen on both sides. The 1853-D is often found on poorly produced planchets but this piece displays a high quality appearance.LUSTER: Rich satiny luster can be plainly seen on the obverse and the reverse, and magnification reveals light die striations that are responsible for the semi-prooflike glimmer seen on each side.COLORATION: The obverse is a medium green-gold and orange blend with some slight steel-blue splashes around the stars. The reverse is a lighter, even orange-gold hue.EYE APPEAL: The exceptionally sharp strike noted above gives this coin very strong eye appeal. It is also a clean, vibrant example with choice surfaces and luster.COMPARABLES: In our 1999 FUN auction, we sold a high end PCGS MS62 example for an amazing $22,425. Later that year, a PCGS MS62 brought $10,638 in our ANA sale. As far back as Auction '84 a coin that is now in a PCGS MS63 holder (in the Duke's Creek collection) was bid up to $14,850.PEDIGREE: Obtained from New York Gold Mart in 1997. This is the plate coin in the second edition of "Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint, 1838-1861" and is listed in the Condition Census. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder.
