1853-D G$1 MS61 NGC. Winter 5-G, the only known dies. In grades above the XF level, the 1853-D is the rarest Type One Gold Dollar from the Dahlonega Mint after the 1850-D and the 1852-D. It ranks ninth in high grade rarity among all Gold Dollars from the Georgia branch mint with only 49-55 pieces believed extant in AU and Mint State (per Winter, 1997). The staff in Dahlonega used only one die pair to produce a mere 6,583 Gold Dollars in 1853. On the whole, they did a rather poor job. Mint-made defects such as planchet voids and cracks often plague survivors of this issue, and many show distracting incompleteness of strike. The present example, on the other hand, is boldly impressed in all areas with the exception of Liberty's hair above the eye and at the top of the bun. The planchet is problem-free, although we do note some interesting die scratches (as produced) in the fields, most noticeably on the reverse around the 1 in the denomination. An attractive yellow-gold example with suggestions of a semi-prooflike finish and a typical number of wispy handing marks for the MS61 grade level. We are aware of three recent auction appearances of MS61 NGC 1853-D Gold Dollars, one of which may be the present example: 1. Ex: Stack's sale of September 1995, lot 301, where it realized $6,380. 2. Ex: Superior's sale of February 1999, lot 1672, where it realized $12,650. 3. Ex: Larry and Ira Goldberg's sale of September 1999, lot 1585, where it realized $9,775.From the Ashland City Collection.
