1853-D $5 MS62 NGC. Winter 23-Q, the reverse die of which was also used to deliver some 1852-D Fives. With a respectable (by Dahlonega Mint standards) extant population of 225-250 coins from an original mintage of 89,678 pieces, the 1853-D is the most plentiful D-mint Half Eagle in today's hobby. The date is also the most common in high grades, but Winter (1997) stresses that Mint State survivors are rare in an absolute sense. Alternating between green-gold and yellow-gold colors as it rotates under the light, the present example is bright with some scattered, mostly small abrasions. The centers are generally well defined with the exception of the highest central features, but we note some isolated striking incompleteness around the peripheries that is relatively common for the issue. A tiny depression in the obverse field before Liberty's brow and a reverse reeding mark above the eagle's right (facing) wing are noted. From the collection of Lance Burney.
