1853-D $5 Large D MS62 NGC. Variety 29-U. Slight recutting of the mintmark is visible below and inside the D. It appears that this variety is much more elusive than the rest for this issue. This Mint State example is brilliant and lustrous with light yellow-gold surfaces, brighter than most examples that are seen. The surfaces are lightly marked, as expected for the grade, but this example exhibits a higher degree of eye appeal than many. Slight central design weakness is noted on both sides, typical of nearly all Dahlonega Mint products. The 1853-D is as close to a "type coin" as a Dahlonega coin gets, and for the collector who wants an appealing example of a Dahlonega half eagle, this high-quality, yet comparatively inexpensive piece is an excellent candidate. Census: 6 in 62, 7 finer (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
