1853-D<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. Variety 16-M. A flashy, mildly reflective example with a touch of orange patina blending nicely with the green-gold alloy. As with virtually all surviving 1853-D quarter eagles, estimated to be fewer than 100 coins, there is noticeable softness on the curls over Liberty's brow and on IBER above. Localized weakness is also noted on the eagle's legs and talons. A triangular blemish and a faint pinscratch above and to the right of the eagle's head will help identify this solid Condition Census representative in the future. Just 3,178 pieces were struck as D-mint Quarter Eagle production continued to fall off in favor of the more commercially popular Five Dollar coin. Population: 1 in 62, 0 finer (11/05).
From The Watson Collection.
