1853-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 16-M. Attractively toned in unusual powder-blue, olive, and orange shades. Luster dominates this unabraded Dahlonega quarter eagle. The strike is surprisingly sharp on the curls, stars, and eagle's neck, with incompleteness limited to the eagle's left (facing) leg and right claw. The 1853-D has a tiny production of 3,178 pieces, since half eagles were the favored denomination of gold depositors. Most certified 1853-D examples are in XF or AU grades, and Uncirculated survivors are very rare. At the MS62 level, the present piece qualifies for high placement within the condition census, since none have been certified finer at either major service. Census: 3 in 62, 0 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
