1853-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Variety 16-M. A smooth apricot-gold representative with uncommonly mark-free fields and devices. Sharply struck throughout most of the design, particularly on the stars, wings, eagle's neck, shield, and hair above the coronet. The left side dentils are soft, and the eagle's left (facing) leg is moderately weak. Glowing luster flows throughout the devices and borders, while the fields offer a hint of reflectivity. Even for the Dahlonega Mint, the 1853-D quarter eagle has a minuscule emission. Just 3,178 pieces were issued. Although rare in all grades, the majority of survivors are clustered in VF-AU grades. PCGS and NGC combined have certified only 14 pieces in Mint State, some of which may represent resubmissions. Population: 4 in 61, 2 finer (6/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
