1853-D $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS. Winter 16-L. A dazzling example of this low mintage Southern gold rarity, last sold in our 2001 FUN Sale with the description that follows: "Almost fully prooflike and remarkable as such; this is one of just a small handful of Dahlonega gold coins known that has naturally reflective surfaces. Both the obverse and reverse show intense splashes of fiery orange-gold color and have excellent overall detail for this typically soft issue. There are a few light marks and scattered, raised mint-made die lines whose significance are enhanced by the depth of the reflectiveness in the fields. This coin has an appearance like no other 1853-D quarter eagle we have seen or heard of and it is regarded as the third finest known. The 1853-D is a very scarce coin in any grade with an estimated 65-75 pieces known. Most grade Very Fine to Extremely Fine and accurately graded About Uncirculated pieces are rare. There are either five or six Uncirculated 1853-D Quarter Eagles. The finest is a PCGS MS 61 in the Duke's Creek Collection that was originally lot 1275 in Mid-America's May, 1985 Jasper Robertson sale, and the second finest is the North Georgia coin (lot 7653) that we sold in January, 1999 for $36,800; it is currently in an NGC MS 62 holder. The present coin is the third finest known and is probably the most visually impressive 1853-D Quarter Eagle extant.Ex: 2001 Fun Sale (HNAI, 1/01), lot 8091, realizing $13,225. Ex: Harry Bass II (Bowers and Merena, 10/99), lot 461, where it realized $20,700; Stack's May, 1968 Sale, lot 727." From the Ashland City Collection.
