1853-C G$1 MS62 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Winter 8-I. Despite Winter's contention that the 1853-C is the worst struck Type One Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint, the present example is rather well detailed. Of course, the strike is not complete, but the usual problem areas (the hair curls above Liberty's brow, the star centrils, and the central reverse) are bold, if not sharp. Both sides exhibit green-gold color that brightens to orange-gold shades as the coin turns into the light. There are some minor abrasions scattered about, none of which are individually distracting, and the problem-free planchet is noteworthy for the issue. Although this issue's original mintage of 11,515 pieces is generous for a Gold Dollar from the Charlotte Mint, the absence of an 1854-C delivery suggests that the 1853-C suffered an uncommonly high rate of attrition through circulation. Indeed, examples in today's market are nearly as rare as those of the lower mintage 1852-C delivery.Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 32, where it realized $7,475.
