1853-C G$1 AU58 NGC.
1853-C G$1 AU58 NGC.<p>The final Type One Gold Dollar from the North Carolina branch mint, the 1853-C was produced to the extent of just 11,515 pieces. Although produced in greater numbers than the 1852-C, both issues are similar in overall rarity. Winter states that only 130-140 1853-C Gold Dollars are extant, the majority of which grade no finer than XF. Since Uncirculated survivors number only 10-12 coins (again per Winter), the present near-Mint representative is sure to elicit strong bids from Southern gold specialists. The strike is typical of the issue with softness of detail in the centers. Both sides exhibit olive-gold color with a smattering of light to moderate abrasions from circulation. A scrape in the obverse field between stars 4 and 5 is worthy of individual mention. We last offered a similarly graded '53-C Gold Dollar as lot 8787 in our May-June 2001 Long Beach Signature Sale. That coin realized $2,300. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
