1853-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 8-I. The final Type O
1853-C G$1 AU58 NGC. Variety 8-I. The final Type One Gold Dollar from the North Carolina branch mint, the 1853-C was produced to the extent of just 11,515 pieces. Although produced in greater numbers than the 1852-C, both issues are similar in overall rarity. Winter states that only 130-140 1853-C Gold Dollars are extant, the majority of which grade no finer than XF. Since Uncirculated survivors number only 10-12 coins (again per Winter), the present near-Mint representative is sure to elicit strong bids from Southern gold specialists. The hair directly above Liberty's ear is well struck, and the devices are considerably sharper than generally seen. Extensive shimmering, yellow-gold luster lends eye appeal, and the surfaces are refreshingly undisturbed aside from a couple of scratches near the 1 of the denomination on the reverse. Lot:7470
