1853-C $5 MS64 PCGS. Winter 20-H. Die State I. An early die state, the mintmark is boldly defined and there are no die cracks on either side. Actually, this coin is free of bothersome striking impairments as well as singularly distracting abrasions. The planchet is particularly choice for a C-mint gold coin, and the bold, if not sharp striking definition seen throughout speaks volumes about the care with which this coin was produced. The fulsome satin luster provides a modest glow in the fields, and the color is an aesthetically pleasing blend of olive-gold and orange-gold shades. In terms of total number of coins known (185-195 survivors from an original mintage of 65,571 pieces), the 1853-C is the second most common C-mint Five along with the 1858-C. In high grades (AU-Mint State), these two dates are also the most easily obtainable Half Eagles from the Charlotte Mint. Of course, neither the 1853-C nor the 1858-C are common in grades that approach the MS65 level of preservation, and the present near-Gem is one of only two such graded coins known to NGC and PCGS. There are none finer (11/02). Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
