1853-C $5 AU58 PCGS
1853-C $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 20-H. Almost fully struck except for some minor weakness on the curls above the eye and toward the ear; this weakness is not uncommon on 1853-C half eagles. The mintmark is also bold which is significant as a number of 1853-C half eagles have faint mintmarks. The surfaces are virtually unmarked and it is extremely hard to find Charlotte half eagles that are this immaculate, regardless of date. The luster is frosty with a bit of prooflike surface interspersed. It is bold and complete and there is no sign of wear on the high spots. The color is very attractive with deep yellow gold hues on the obverse and reverse; some reddish tinges can be seen at the left obverse border. The color is pleasing and this coin deserves to sell for a premium if only for its lovely natural toning. This is a fresh and original coin that appears to be Uncirculated by today's standards. Housed in an old green label PCGS holder.
The 1853-C is one of the two most common half eagles from this mint. It is relatively common even in the lower AU grades but properly graded, original AU55s and 58s are becoming harder to find. There are as many as a dozen to 15 known in Uncirculated and the finest is an MS64 that has been graded by PCGS.
From The Carolina Circle Collection.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
