1853 50C Peacock Reverse 50 Cents, BG-302, Low R.4, MS62 PCGS. Collectors of Private Small Denomination Gold are well aware that the majority of the reverse dies for this series depict wreaths, in imitation of the Federal Gold Dollar of the era. Some of the Period One issues managed to avoid this conformity, and these diverse types are highly popular. Only BG-302 and the very rare BG-303 carry the Peacock Reverse in its full glory, since the three Round 50 Cent varieties do not display the peacock plumage behind the body. This older holder piece features original olive-gold toning, with hints of blended plum and steel-blue color on the left reverse. Well struck, and despite a small mint-made lamination near the D in F.D., more attractive than the assigned grade implies.
Ex: Superior (6/97), lot 1255.
