1853 50C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. There are whispers of olive color here and there, but the outward appearance is one of even dove-gray patina. The toning is light enough to allow billowy mint frost to shine through at most angles, and the crisply impressed features are also readily evident. The Philadelphia Mint delivered 3.5 million Half Dollars of the new Arrows and Rays type in 1853. These coins were meant to replace the older, heavier examples that had been largely withdrawn from circulation and melted after gold was discovered in California. As a result, the 1853 Arrows and Rays, while common in worn grades, is a challenging date to locate in the finer Mint State grades. This is a coin that would make an impressive addition to a high grade type set. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
